We are not going to tell you cheap web design is a bad idea — it is what we do. But there are specific ways it goes wrong in Dublin, and every one of them is something you can check before handing over money.
The domain registered in their name, not yours
The most common way Dublin businesses end up trapped. It costs nothing to do correctly and it is worth checking before you pay anyone a cent. Ask the question directly: whose name will the domain be registered in? If the answer is not your business, walk.
A cheap build with no handover route
A €400 site is a bargain right up to the point you want to move it. Ask what happens if you leave — whether you get the files, what it costs, how long it takes. A supplier with no answer ready has not thought about it, which tells you what month eighteen will look like.
Hosting billed separately, later
The quote covers the build. Then the hosting invoice arrives from somewhere else, then the SSL renewal, then the domain. Add them up before you compare quotes — a cheap build with three separate annual bills is frequently dearer than an all-inclusive monthly one.
Per-edit billing
Changing your opening hours should not generate an invoice. Find out before you sign what a content change costs and how long it takes, because "sure we'll look after you" becomes an hourly rate the first time you need something at short notice.
A template resold at scale with nothing local in it
There is nothing wrong with a proven layout — we use them. There is something wrong with a site that never names a Dublin suburb, because a search for "electrician Stillorgan" has nothing on the page to match against. Cheap is fine; generic is what actually costs you the enquiries.

Two things are true here that are not true elsewhere in the country, and both affect what you should actually pay.
Dublin has four Local Enterprise Offices
Not one. Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, and which one you deal with is decided by the local authority area your business trades in. They run their own schedules and their own assessment, so applying to the wrong one costs you weeks. Dublin is not one market, and a cheap site usually treats it as one
Somebody in Stillorgan searching for a tradesman does not type "Dublin" — they type "Stillorgan", or "Sandyford", or "Dundrum". A budget site that says "Dublin and surrounding areas" has nothing for those searches to match against, which is why plenty of perfectly decent cheap Dublin sites get no calls at all.
