Does my small business actually need a website?
If you are busy on word of mouth, the honest answer is that you do not need one to survive. But word of mouth has changed shape. Somebody recommends you, and before they ring, the person they recommended you to searches your name. What they find at that moment either confirms the recommendation or quietly undermines it.
That is the real job of a small business website, and it is not lead generation. It is passing the check. A customer who has just been told you are excellent, and then finds nothing, or a Facebook page last posted to in 2023, hesitates. They will probably still ring — but they ring less confidently, and they compare you with somebody who looked more established.
The second job is being found by people who were never recommended you at all. Those searches are specific and local — the service plus the town. A site that names what you do and where you do it competes for them. That is most of what local SEO amounts to for a small business, and we cover the usual failures on why your business is not showing up on Google.
Can I just use a Facebook page instead?
It is better than nothing and worth keeping, but it does a different job. A Facebook page is where people who already know you keep up with you. A website is where people who do not know you decide whether to trust you. The two audiences are not the same and they arrive by completely different routes.
Practically, a page is a feed. Your prices, your service areas and your opening hours scroll away within days, so a customer has to dig for basics — and most will not. Messages land in an inbox alongside spam. And it ranks for your business name at best, not for the service and town somebody actually typed.
The argument that matters most is ownership. Your followers are not yours, the reach is set by someone else, and pages do get restricted or locked with no warning and no useful appeal. A website, and the domain and email that come with it, are the only part of your presence that cannot be taken away. Use social to reach people, and the site to convert them.
The five pages, and what belongs on each
This is the whole of a first website. Get these right and you can add to it later.
Home — what you do, and where
The service and the county in the first line, a tappable phone number, and one clear next step. A visitor decides in seconds whether they are in the right place.
Services — what you take on
And what you do not. Being specific about the jobs you want filters out the enquiries that waste an afternoon, and it is what specific searches match against.
Areas covered — named
The towns and suburbs, written out. 'Nationwide' and 'and surrounding areas' match nothing anybody actually types into Google.
Proof — photographs of real work
Your own jobs, not stock images. Customers can tell the difference immediately, and for trades this is the most persuasive thing on the site.
Some indication of price
A from-figure, a typical range, or how you charge. Not knowing is the most common reason a visitor leaves without contacting anyone.
Contact — with as little friction as possible
Phone number, a short form, and your hours. Every extra field on a form loses you enquiries, so ask only for what you need to reply.
What goes on a first website?
Less than you think, and the temptation to plan twenty pages is exactly what stops most small businesses ever launching. Five pages does the job: what you do, who you are, the areas you cover, some proof of real work, and how to contact you. A five-page site that is live beats a twenty-page site that has been in draft for eight months.
The details that decide whether an enquiry happens are unglamorous. A phone number visible without scrolling and tappable on a phone. The towns you serve, written out. Some indication of price, even a from-figure, because not knowing is the commonest reason people leave. Photographs of your own work rather than stock images — customers can tell, and for trades especially it is the single most persuasive thing on the page.
After that, one page per service rather than a single list, because that is how you appear for specific searches. Trades, accountancy firms and cleaning contractors all work the same way. That is what the Bigger Brochure plan, from €900, is for. But start with five pages and get live. If cost is the sticking point, the affordable web design page sets out what cheap really costs, and tradesmen have a page of their own.
