Why Is My Business Not Showing Up on Google?

Seven reasons Irish small businesses stay invisible in search — and what to do about each one. Most of them you can fix yourself this week, for nothing.

Start here: a 30-second diagnosis

Search Google for site:yourdomain.ie — with no space after the colon.

  • Nothing comes back? Your site isn't indexed at all. Jump to reason 7 — it's a technical block, and nothing else matters until it's cleared.
  • Your pages appear? You're indexed, so this is a visibility problem, not an existence problem. Reasons 1 to 6 apply.

Now search your trade and your town — "plumber Tallaght" — on your phone, not your laptop. Whatever you see there is what your customers see.

Reason 1

You don't have a Google Business Profile — or it's unverified

What it looks like
You search your business name and a competitor's map listing appears instead of yours.
Why it happens
The Map Pack — those three businesses with the map beside them — is filled almost entirely from Google Business Profiles, not websites. No verified profile means you are not eligible, no matter how good your site is. Roughly half the Irish small businesses we look at either have no profile or have one they have never claimed.
The fix
Create a profile at google.com/business and complete the postcard or phone verification. Fill in every field — category, hours, service area, photos. A half-finished profile ranks like a half-finished profile.

Reason 2

Google cannot tell what your business actually is

What it looks like
You rank for your own business name but nothing else — not your trade, not your town.
Why it happens
Your website says you are a plumber in Tallaght in words a human reads easily. Google reads that text and infers. Structured data removes the inference: it states your business type, address, Eircode, opening hours and phone number in a machine-readable format, and it links your website to your Google Business Profile so Google is confident they are the same business.
The fix
Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage with the correct Schema.org type for your trade. Our generator below does it for you.

Reason 3

Your site is too slow to compete

What it looks like
You appear on page two or three for searches you should be winning locally.
Why it happens
Core Web Vitals are part of how Google assesses page experience. Speed will not push bad content above good content, but between two similar local businesses the faster site wins — and most local searches happen on a phone on mobile data, where a heavy site suffers most.
The fix
Test your load time and fix what the report flags. Compressing images and dropping unused plugins usually recovers most of it.

Reason 4

Your name, address and phone number disagree across the web

What it looks like
You appear sporadically, or Google shows an old address or a disconnected number.
Why it happens
Google cross-references your details across directories, social profiles and your own site. If your Facebook page says one phone number, an old directory listing says another, and your website says a third, Google loses confidence in all of them — and confidence is what local ranking is built on.
The fix
Pick one exact format for your business name, address and phone, then make every listing match it character for character. Fix your own website first, then Google Business Profile, then the directories.

Reason 5

You have no reviews, or none recently

What it looks like
You are visible but always below competitors with visible star ratings.
Why it happens
Review count and recency are among the strongest Map Pack signals. Ten reviews from the last six months typically outperform forty reviews from four years ago, and a listing with no stars is far less likely to be clicked even when it does rank.
The fix
Ask every satisfied customer, in person or by text, with a direct link to your review form. A steady trickle beats a burst.

Reason 6

You have no page for what people actually search

What it looks like
You rank for your business name but never for 'emergency plumber Rathfarnham'.
Why it happens
People do not search for your business name — they search for a service in a place. If no page on your site is genuinely about that service in that place, there is nothing for Google to rank. A single homepage listing eight services in one paragraph competes for none of them properly.
The fix
Give each main service its own page, written for the towns you actually serve. Thin duplicated pages for fifty towns will not work and may be treated as spam — write real pages for the areas that matter.

Reason 7

Your site is technically blocked from being indexed

What it looks like
Nothing you do makes any difference, and searching your exact domain returns nothing.
Why it happens
This is rarer but brutal when it happens. A leftover 'Discourage search engines' setting from when the site was being built, a stray noindex tag, or a robots.txt rule can keep an entire site out of Google indefinitely.
The fix
Search Google for site:yourdomain.ie — if nothing comes back, you are not indexed. Check your CMS's search-engine visibility setting, then verify the site in Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.

The one most people skip: schema markup

Of the seven, this is the one almost nobody does — and it's a one-off job that keeps working. Schema markup is a small block of invisible code that tells Google, in plain machine-readable terms: this is a plumbing business, it's at this Eircode, it's open until 5:30pm today, this is the phone number, and this website belongs to that Google Business Profile you already have.

Without it, Google is inferring all of that from your page copy. With it, Google knows. It's also what makes you eligible for the richer search listings — opening hours, star ratings, FAQ dropdowns — that take up more of the page than a plain blue link.

You don't need a developer to produce it. Our generator asks a few questions and writes the code, with the correct Schema.org type for your trade and the Irish fields most tools leave out.

Once you have the code, send it to whoever looks after your website — pasting it in takes five minutes for anyone with access. If it turns out your site itself is the problem rather than the settings, we build sites with schema, speed and local SEO included from day one, from €50 a month with nothing upfront.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new business to show up on Google?

A new Google Business Profile usually appears within a few days of verification. A brand new website typically takes a few weeks to be indexed and several months to rank for competitive local searches. If a site has been live for more than a month and still returns nothing for a site:yourdomain.ie search, something is technically wrong rather than slow.

Why does my competitor rank above me when my website is better?

For local searches, the Map Pack is driven mostly by the Google Business Profile — proximity to the searcher, category, reviews and how complete the profile is — rather than by website quality. A competitor with a fully completed profile and thirty recent reviews will usually beat a better website with a neglected profile.

Do I need to pay Google to appear in search results?

No. Google Business Profile is free, and organic listings cannot be bought. Google Ads buys the clearly labelled sponsored slots at the top of the page — useful for immediate visibility, but it does not improve your organic or Map Pack position.

Can I fix this myself?

Most of it, yes. Claiming and completing your Google Business Profile, making your contact details consistent everywhere and asking customers for reviews cost nothing but time, and they are the highest-impact items on this list. The technical items — schema markup, page speed, indexing problems — usually need whoever built your site, or us.

Does schema markup help my business show up on Google?

Schema markup is not a direct ranking factor, but it removes ambiguity about what your business is, where it is and when it is open, and it makes you eligible for rich results like opening hours and star ratings in the search listing. It is a small job with a lasting effect, which is why it is worth doing properly.

What to do first

If you only do three things: claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, make your name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear, and ask your next ten customers for a review. Those cost nothing and move the needle furthest.

Then handle the technical layer — add schema markup, check your load times, and confirm you're actually indexed. For the full picture on ranking locally, read our local SEO guide for Irish businesses.
