Web design in Kilkenny

Kilkenny is a small city with a national reputation for design, and that raises the bar for everyone trading in it. A website here is judged on whether it looks considered.

We design your homepage first and you pay nothing until you approve it.

Kilkenny judges a website on how it looks, and that is not vanity

Kilkenny has spent decades building a reputation as Ireland's design county. The Design & Crafts Council is based here, the craft trail runs through Thomastown and Bennettsbridge, and a large share of the county's visitor economy exists because people associate the place with things made well. That reputation sets an expectation, and it applies to your website whether or not you are in the craft trade at all.

The practical consequence is that a template with a stock photograph of a handshake actively costs you money in Kilkenny in a way it might not in a county trading purely on price. A visitor who has come for the medieval mile and the craft trail has already calibrated what "well made" looks like that day. A site that looks thrown together reads as a business that does not care much, and there is no argument you can put in the copy that undoes that first impression.

For a maker or a gallery, the site has a second job: photographs have to survive being looked at properly. That means real images of real work at a size that rewards attention, loading fast enough that nobody gives up — not a gallery plugin that takes four seconds and then shows a lightbox nobody can close on a phone.

One consequence worth naming: in a county that trades on independent makers and independent kitchens, looking like a chain is a real cost. An About page with a face, a name and a plain account of how long you have been at it outperforms corporate copy here by a wide margin — and it is the page most businesses write last and worst.

If you only do three things for a Kilkenny business, do these

In order. They are worth more than a redesign, and the first two cost nothing but attention.

1

Photograph the work properly, once

A half-day with somebody who can light a workshop or a dining room is the highest-return money you will spend on a Kilkenny site. This is a county where visitors arrive having just looked at things made well, and phone snapshots under fluorescent light lose against that comparison before a word is read.

2

Make opening hours unmissable and true

Visitor trade decides on the day, on a phone, standing somewhere in the city. Hours, a working map link and a number that dials in one tap matter more here than any amount of copy — and hours that are wrong once cost you that customer permanently.

3

Build the stockists or where-to-find-us page

If you sell through galleries, shops or a market as well as directly, that is the page people actually use, and it is the one most craft and food businesses never build. It also earns links from the places it names, which nothing else on the site will do.

Towns and areas we build for in Kilkenny

Somebody in Kilkenny city searches for Kilkenny city, not for "Kilkenny and surrounding areas" — a phrase that ranks for nothing and tells a customer nothing either. Naming places one by one is what wins those searches:

  • Kilkenny city
  • Thomastown
  • Callan
  • Castlecomer
  • Graiguenamanagh
  • Bennettsbridge
  • Freshford
  • Urlingford

Not on the list? It makes no difference to the build — everything runs by phone, email and video, and the areas named on your site are the ones you tell us you serve.

The kind of business we build for in Kilkenny

The county's business mix decides what a site has to do. These are the sectors the work here usually falls into:

Craft, design and makers
Hospitality and visitor trade
Restaurants and cafés
Trades and construction
Agriculture and agri-services
Professional services

Trades are a large share of the work — see tradesman website design, or small business websites for everything else. If you are starting out, it is worth checking whether you qualify for the Grow Digital voucher.

What a Kilkenny business pays

The same prices apply everywhere in Ireland. There is no county premium and no discount for distance from Dublin, because the work is identical: five pages from €0 upfront and €50 a month, or €599 once if you would rather own it outright. Hosting, domain, SSL, security and a monthly content update are included.

Kilkenny questions

I sell craft work. Do I need an online shop?
Often not at first, and the honest answer saves you money. If most of your trade is through the studio, a gallery or a handful of stockists, what you need is a site that makes the work look like itself and makes you easy to contact — plus the stockist list, which is the page people actually use. A shop adds payment handling, stock, postage rules and returns policy, all of which need maintaining. It belongs on the Custom tier and it is worth doing once the demand is demonstrably there rather than in the hope of creating it.
Most of my customers are visitors rather than locals. Does that change the site?
It changes what has to be right. Visitor trade searches on a phone, often on the day, often for opening hours and how to find you — so hours have to be current, the map link has to work, and the page has to load on a bad signal in the city centre. It also means your Google Business Profile does more of the work than your homepage does, and it needs photographs and hours kept up to date rather than claimed once and forgotten.
Do you work with businesses outside Kilkenny city?
Yes — Thomastown, Callan, Castlecomer, Graiguenamanagh and the smaller towns are all within the same county market, and for a trade or a service business the towns you actually cover matter more to your search visibility than the county name does. We name them individually on the site rather than writing "Kilkenny and surrounding areas", because that phrase ranks for nothing.
How much does a website cost in Kilkenny?
€0 upfront and €50 a month for a five-page site, including hosting, domain, SSL, security, one content update a month and Google Business Profile setup, on a 12-month minimum and then month-to-month. €599 once plus €15/month if you would rather own it outright. Ten pages with a blog and quote forms is the Bigger Brochure plan, from €900. Booking systems and portals are quoted from €1,500 plus €125/month. It is all set out on the pricing page.
Do you have an office in Kilkenny?
No — we are Dublin-based and work with businesses across Ireland, Kilkenny included. Building a website needs no site visits, and everything runs by phone, email and video. What matters more than an address is whether your designer still replies in eighteen months and whose name your domain is registered in. Both of those we put in writing.
Will my site rank in Kilkenny?
Nobody can promise a position, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What decides it is the work: naming Thomastown, Callan, Castlecomer, Graiguenamanagh or wherever you actually cover rather than just "Kilkenny", a page for each service, a claimed and maintained Google Business Profile, and fast loading on a phone. For most local businesses that is the bulk of it.
Can you take over the site I already have?
Usually yes. If it is a WordPress site that has gone slow or insecure, we either maintain it properly or migrate it to a static build — see WordPress maintenance and security. Run it through our free speed test first to see where it stands.

We build elsewhere in Ireland too

Everything is remote, so the county makes no difference to the build — only to what the site has to say. A few others:

Also Dublin, Cork and Galway.

  • Web design Tipperary

The county next door, and a completely different problem: no dominant town, so the search behaviour is town-led rather than county-led.

  • Menu websites for restaurants

Kilkenny's visitor trade runs on food and hospitality — a menu that loads on a phone in the city centre does more work than a brochure page.
